Tunisian Crochet Octopus

Here is my rough written pattern. There is a video for each part.  This is written with the intention you have a basic knowledge of tunisian and regular crochet.

You will need some size 4 yarn and I used an “I” hook or any yarn of your choice  and a crochet hook 1-2 sizes bigger than the yarn recommends  a small amount of yarn for the eyes and mouth, a sewing needle and stitch markers.  You can use a standard crochet hook, but one without an added handle. It needs to be able to hold 16 loops.

Here is my basic pattern for part 1.  It is TSS and can be made with a standard crochet hook (without an added handle):

Make 2 pieces 

Chain 8

Row 1 pull up a loop in each chain across (8) Do the basic return

Row 2 increase in the first and last vertical bar (10)  Do the basic return

Row 3 increase in the first and last vertical bar (12)  Do the basic return

Row 4 increase in the first and last vertical bar (14)  Do the basic return

Row 5 increase in the first and last vertical bar (16)  Do the basic return

Row 6-15 Tss (16) 

Bind off after row 16

Here is the basic pattern for part 2. It is all standard crochet 

Make 4

CH 24 

2 SC in each chain across.  Finish off and tie ends of each leg together.

Here is the basic pattern for part 3. It is stitching on the eyes and mouth and securing the legs to make putting it all together.  Refer to the video for a visual on how and where I place everything.

Here is the basic pattern for part 4.  It is all standard crochet and the assembly of the parts.

Line up both sides, wrong sides together and single crochet in each edge stitch around. Put 2 SC in each corner stitch.  For the bottom where the legs are, I crocheted through each leg.  I kept my working yarn in front of the leg.

A little morning crochet

I have been working on this Huntley Gift Bag by Yarn and Chai for a few days off and on.  I am going to leave off the handles and make straps for a walker bag to donate to a local nursing home.  I'm using a couple different shades of pink scrap balls.  

This seems to be working up pretty quick.  I just have problems with holding the bulkiness of the 2 strands for long periods of time.

The tunisian hat is getting close to trying the decrease with the honeycomb stitch.  hopefully i can figure it out and share it with you soon.

 Here is a cute kitty cat I made recently made. He’s quite fat compared to the others from the same pattern.   The hat is totally custom. Hubby said he needed a bowler hat.  

Here are a couple of crochet hats I have made for my preschool donation. It’s a free pattern

Hat number 29 and 30 of 100

 Here are hats number 29 and 30 of the 100 hats for preschool. Almost all my hats so far have been made on my addi. It has made making hats to donate a whole lot easier. Definitely worth the investment. 

I love knitting variegated yarn!

 I always say yarn manufacturers create [non solid] yarns with knitters in mind. With crochet and tunisian crochet you often loose the patterning. I love knitting hats and often get the jitters when I first cast on. I don’t know brand or color of this yarn as it was gifted to me. Tonight I casted on a hat. I can’t wait to see how the color pattern plays out. 

I’ll update with the final results when I finish it. 

Tunisian Honeycomb Stocking Hat Bottom Up In The Round (Adult Size)

 

Here's my basic instructions to make this hat

I used redheart favorite stripes for my main color and white for my return color

Double End "I" hook,

2 colors of yarn

chain 80

Without twisting, join to make a circle TSS around using DE hook to make return stitch. (80)

Use whatever "ribbing" stitch you would like for 2 inches (6 rows for me),  I used the rib stitch for this hat.  On last row Return stitch through both loops on the last 2 stitches. (79 stitches on the last row)  This makes the odd number required for the honeycomb stitch.

Start the honeycomb stitch and continue for a total hat height of about 6".

Increase 1 stitch on the last row of your honeycomb stitch. (back to 80 stitches)

Using TSS, tss the first 6 stitches then  the 7th and 8th stitches together continue around.

continue decreasing until you have a small opening (4-6 stitches) at the top.  Cut your yarns and put them inside the hat.  Turn it wrong side oud and use the return color, continue going in the same direction and run it through the loops.  Pull it tight and tie the 2 ends together.  

Mine curled  so I crocheted a single row of single crochet around the bottom.

My hat measured right around 8" tall

100 Hats for Preschool Donation

One of the ladies from my church helps with the preschool classes at a local grade school. My church provides backpacks and school supplies for the preschool each fall. A couple years ago my mom decided to make hats for them. I helped her a little but she made most of them. Mom has moved away to another town so I have decided to take over. I enjoy making hats and giving them away. I’ve done it for several years, just not in that big of a bulk.

Got the notice from my friend at church on Sunday May 9, 2021 that all previous donated hats had been given out. I would like to have the hats all made and ready to take to my friend by the first Sunday in November, unless it looks like winter is coming earlier than usual this year.

I counted my hats I had stored plus ones I’ve made so far this year. If I counted correctly I had 40 hats. I need at least 100 total. I’ve finished, with a small donation from my sister (8 hats) the 100 hats to donate to a local preschool.
