Happy Homemaker Monday ~~ 8/25/2014

I am SO glad that my google account is ok.  Over the weekend I had a panic and thought it had been compromised.  ALL my contacts in my address book had the correct e-address but the names were all the same and not individual for each contact.  I panicked and moved things around and was prepared to move my blog.  I checked again last night, when I had more time, and was going to see if there was some way to reset or clear the information without deleting my account.  I didn't want to delete because I have documents in google drive and videos on youtube.  Thankfully everything appeared to be back to normal.  Now for Happy Homemaker Monday, the one post I get up every week.

Breakfast this morning:  Just a cup of coffee with suisse mocha creamer.  Lunch will be in about an hour.

The weather outside today:  It's currently 84* with a heat index of 90*.  Today's high is to be 100* (with probably at least a 15* heat index), and a low of 75*.  The rest of the week looks about the same with a chance of rain Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Looking outside right now:  The sun is shining and it's going to be another HOT day!

So far today I have:  Gotten up, come to the shop with hubby, made coffee, assisted a customer, paid bills, ordered ice cream, finished scanning the MTG cards for hubby that I started Saturday, posted to the business pages on Facebook, and now I'm writing this post.

Looking around the house:  It's not bad.  The floors need vacuumed and there are the dirty dishes in the sink from the pasta I made last night,

On this week's To DO list:   Tonight I need to take the vacuum home from the castle.  The bagless I have at home....I hate it and always have.  It was MIL's and I didn't like it when I cleaned for her. Anyway I need to vacuum, spray the floors for fleas.  They are really bad this year!  Remake the menu for Cosmic Castle, taking some things off and adding a few others.  And I'm sure there is tons more that will need to be done that I haven't even thought about yet.

I'm thankful for:  Lots of things!  First I am thankful for the business we had last week.  I'm thankful that one of our church members, who is also a teacher at the high school, has made arrangements for the school security officers (basically policemen) to patrol the Castle Friday night for the moonlight madness (more on that under Thinking and pondering).  AND I just got a text from my sister that she will be able to come help in our back game room, keeping things under control on Friday night.

Praying for:
  • my niece
  • the individual with the building we would like to have to reconsider our offer
  • maybe a different location all together that would work for us.
  • Friday night to NOT be a disaster or stressful!

Thinking and pondering:  The 'Moonlight Madness" event our town has every year.  After the soap scrimmage they encourage the kids and parents, but it's mostly the kids, to come downtown for huge sales in participating businesses.  One of the banks provides Free hot dogs and sodas for the kids and parents.  There is NOTHING for the kids to do, no organized events or programs, so they cause trouble!  I guess they assume WE are their entertainment, being an arcade, but 99% of the kids HAVE NO MONEY and just come in and cause trouble.  WHY don't they have something organized for the kids if they are bringing them downtown?  The kids could care less about the sales in the stores.  This is the 4th year they have done it, and the 2nd year for us to be open at the castle.  The first year we were open at the shop, the 2nd year we were working on the castle and it wasn't open yet, we were open last year, and are planning to be open this year as well.

From the camera: I didn't get around to taking pictures this week.

Currently reading:   Right now I don't have a book I'm reading, but I finally got  Among the Hidden (Shadow Children) on Saturday from the e-book loan, and I read the entire book before the day was up.  Unfortunately that is because we were SLOW :-(.  I have the next one in the series on hold.  Current hold time was approximately 45 days on Saturday.   I also read Face the Winter Naked this past week.  Both books were excellent!

Watched on the computer this past week:
In my spare time I've been watching Restaurant Impossible online and writing down little bits of good information from Chef Robert.  Used to watch this all the time when we had cable.  Glad I found this web page so I can watch and learn.
I highly recommend AdBlock via Chrome Extension if you are going to watch online episodes.   AdBlock seems to do the trick and prevents most if not all pop-ups.  You can enable it and disable it as needed.
If I have a few minutes to myself this week I will:
Watch more of the Restaurant Impossible episodes

Visiting with friends:  Not much extra visiting this week, just the regulars on my list on the right sidebar.
P.S.  I think google doesn't like me or something.  I visit all that link up with Sandra for HHM and want to comment on all of them, but I STILL can't comment on the embedded comment boxes.  Only the pop-up ones.  So I DO visit, I just can't comment.  *sigh*

Note to self.....you can't do a factory reset a smartphone that isn't on a plan. I learned this the hard way today. You see.....a few days ago my aneroid was given a swimming lesson, which we all know that most phones don't survive. I used my kindle for a few days before I remembered about my old LG (my very first smartphone)that I had loaned to the boy. I borrowed it back only able to put 3 apps on it due to low space. Today I decided to reset it because I wanted to sync the calendar with my actual google account. "Please enter the telephone number associated with this phone." *SIGH* so......no pocket sized smart devices for me. Dumb phone and old style kindle is all I have that's mobile. I'm wondering if this is Gods way of trying to get my attention. :-)

Happy Homemaker Monday ~~ 8/18/14

The weather outside today:  Well here is the next 10 days......It looks like it's finally summer time in Kansas!  I think the NWS said this is the first summer since about 1954 that we haven't had [actual] 100*+ temps yet.  Well now we are supposed to get them.  Hope our AC can keep up.  So far it's done quite well with the cooler summer temps we have been having.  (click to see a bigger picture)

Looking outside right now:  We just had a brief downpour that lasted maybe a whole 2 minutes.  The sun was shining in the east, dark clouds off to the west and within about 2 minutes the sidewalk and street were wet.  Didn't take long for it to dry either.  Downtown has started waking up (it's 10:45 am) shop keepers have swept in front of their stores, the city workers have been working on the semi-dead grass that's growing up in the cracks of the sidewalks (they got wet in the downpour  LOL).  Cars are starting to fill up the parking spaces for the restaurant next door (which I WILL NOT eat at).  The sky is still looking kind of dark overall, so I wonder if we will be getting more rain.

So far today I have:  Got up and ready for the day.  Cleaned one of the 2 litter boxes.  Fed and watered the cats.  Changed the kitchen trash.  Rode to work with hubby.  opened the shop.  Paid bills.  Took the water bill to the city building and paid it.  Made a pot of coffee (just got my 1st cup and it's time to go get lunch).  Answered the phone several times.  Called in our ice cream order for this week.  Posted to our business pages on Facebook.  Checked my Facebook........and the day has just gotten started!

Thinking and pondering:  Um....not sure.  We did look into a different building this week for the Castle, but discovered it won't work......the doors are to narrow!  The front door is the same width of some of the arcade games, and the sandwich cabinet is a little wider than those games, so.....*sigh*  Still looking and thinking how  and where we can move to and still stay in this town.

I'm thankful for:
that my Mom is OK.  No one has heard from her or been able to contact her in about 2 weeks.  I called the PD in the town she lives in to go do a welfare check on her since neither my sister or I live close enough to just run over and check.  All is good, she just didn't have enough money this month to put minutes on her phone.

Breakfast this morning:  Breakfast?  Ha!  I was too busy paying bills and tending shop duties.  I did munch on a little raw cauliflower.  SO I guess breakfast will be lunch.  I'm having the Bacon Clubhouse burger and fries from McDonalds today.

Looking around the house:  I think I'm actually doing better at keeping things cleaner.  Still no Better Homes & Garden showcase house, but better than it has been since we moved back home in February.

On this week's To DO list:  need to clean the other cat box.  there are a few dirty dishes from last night.  need to vacuum and spray the floor for fleas and flea comb at least Gwen, will do Fuzzy if she will let me.  Need to clean Reecie's cage.

From the camera: I did take a picture just today on my way to get lunch.  I think someone needs training on the difference between plants and weeds.......I'm not totally sure, but I think those tall plants that are almost as tall as the tree, are ragweed.  This is right behind our shop.

Currently reading:  Haven't much been in the reading mood lately.  I am waiting on Among the Hidden (Shadow Children) , a hold I put on an e-book from the Kansas Library System.  It should be available sometime this week.  I've been waiting on it for almost a month.

Watched on the computer this past week:
Last week's Switched at Birth episode HERE.   Tonight is the summer season finale.

I also watched Coal House at War episodes 1-5

I highly recommend AdBlock via Chrome Extension if you are going to watch online episodes.   AdBlock seems to do the trick and prevents most if not all pop-ups.  You can enable it and disable it as needed.
If I have a few minutes to myself this week I will:
If I don't spend them reading I might just dig out some yarn and see about making something.  Christmas is coming.....Like I will actually finish something to give as a gift  LOL!

Visiting with friends:  Not really a friend, but I found this link on pinterest for a travel trailer that attaches to the top of  a 1974 VW Beetle .  Totally Epic!  I Must Have!

Praying for:

  • my niece
  • the individual with the building we would like to have to reconsider our offer
  • maybe a different location all together that would work for us.

The past 3 days have been kind of crazy.  Business was slow, which always makes me more tired then when we are busy.  For some reason I haven't been sleeping well either.  I can feel like I can't keep my eyes open any longer, but the minute I get in bed I'm wide awake.  I'm sure I've slept more than I think I have but it seems like I've slept very little because I look at the clock at 1 am, and 2 am, and 3 am, and 4 am, and next thing I know the alarm is going off.  I've been battling some pretty serious indigestion as well.  I'm laying off the bread and heavy foods for a while.  So far today, so good.  We shall see how I feel when I go to bed.

Today was much better business.  We seemed slow but we really weren't.  Today was one of our busier days this week.  Praise the Lord!

Tonight when I got home I got the clean clothes hung up and folded.  No more living out of a basket for hubby and me.  Actually have a basket for dirty clothes now instead of a pile on the floor.

Tomorrow is Sunday, and I look forward to going to Sunday School and Church.  The next day is Monday and I am looking forward to posting my weekly HHM post.   In fact I'm going to go get started on it now.  See you on Monday, unless something totally newsworthy happens tomorrow.

Tuesday, August 12, 2014

Well now this is kind of exciting.  Since I am down a "smart device" (which is just fine with me for the most part) and my laptop takes forever to start up and gets pretty hot and often times shuts down at the wrong time (it's pretty old), I was messing around on my Kindle (I have an original Kindle) last night and discovered I could write posts from it.  I have to write them in HTML and not in the "compose" mode.  Good thing I know basic HTML.  I did snag the camera from the Castle, but pictures/videos will have to be transferred to a computer then uploaded, which will take extra time.  I'm not really complaining.  It's been a change for me, but I think it's a good change.

Happy Homemaker Monday ~~ 8/11/2014

The weather outside today:

Looking outside:  The sun is shining.  It's not too hot yet.  There is a slight breeze.

This morning I have: swept and swept and swept the basement.  have another inspection at the castle this morning.  i think sweeping the basement could be a part time position.  LOL!

Thinking and pondering: to go or not to go.  this year is my 25th class reunion.  do i want to go or not.  every other time they have had one I didn't go and it was a BYOB type event.  not my idea of a get together.

I'm thankful for: good week for both businesses

Breakfast this morning:  A cup of ice

Looking around the house:  there are a few dirty dishes from late night snacking.  overall it's pretty clean.

On this week's to do list:  need to stop by the grocery store tonight on my way home to pick up a few things.  at the shop today I am putting all the sidewalk sale stuff back on the shelf......with the sale discount still valid.....to clear up at the front door.  that's about all I have planned right now.

Currently reading:  I  still haven't really picked a book.  I have one I started but not sure I am going to read it.

Watching on the Computer today/this past week:  Switched at Birth this week!  You can watch it at 7 central on ABC Family.  If you don't get ABC Family, you can watch last week's episode HERE.

I also watched S1E1 of Mr. Ed on YouTube  I wished TV shows today were as good as shows were back before I was born. LOL!

I highly recommend AdBlock via Chrome Extension if you are going to watch online episodes.   AdBlock seems to do the trick and prevents most if not all pop-ups.  You can enable it and disable it as needed.

If I have a few minutes to myself this week, I will:  Visit some of my favorite blogs again, maybe do some blogging, and read.

New recipe I tried, or want to try this week: We want to try making a  Wild Cherry Cheesecake Sundae  Sounds AMAZING!

Favorite photo from the camera:

Probably no pictures for a long time from me.  Sadly my droid had a swimming lesson this past week and even after the rice cure it didn't survive.  *sigh*

Visiting with blog friends (blog you want to share, blog post that caught your eye):  I didn't really find a blog, but I did fine an online radio station that I can listen to on my Kindle as well.  I Shared about it HERE

Praying for:  We are praying the individual reconsiders on our offer for the building.
Good Business
Me, withdraws from a "smart device".  (actually it hasn't been too bad so far)

I've finally found what I've been looking for!  I'm to the point I can't stand listening to praise & worship or contemporary christian music.  It feels too watered down for me anymore.  I wish  could remember where I seen the article I read this past week about "modern" church music.  I really like the old hymns and wish my church would sing more of them, using the hymn books, not the projector.  To me the old hymns I grew up singing have more meaning and make me think more.  I was browsing blogs and came across a link for KNVBC and thought I'd check it out.  It's perfect!  I have downloaded the app on my [old] phone, and have put a link in the sidebar.  You can also click on the button in this post to listen to some good old fashioned church music (opens in a new window).  Looks like some preaching and other good stuff too.

Listen to KNVBC Revival Radio Now!

Friday Book Review ~~ Safe by the Marshal's Side

Safe by the Marshal's Side (Witness Protection Book 1) by Shirlee McCoy

I wasn't sure I would like this book since  I'm not so much into the mystery and suspense like I was back when I read every Nancy Drew book that was published.  However I was pleasantly surprised.

Young mother, Annie (not her real name, it was changed for her protection) and her young daughter Sophia are in protective custody after Annie's husband was shot and killed.  The killer also tried to kill Annie, but the gun misfired.

Annie and Sophia have been in protective custody for almost a year, awaiting the trial for the individuals that shot and killed her husband.  US Maeshall Hunter Davis and his team have been protecting her.  They have been on the run because for some reason someone keeps finding the safe houses and making threats.  Finally Hunter makes the decision to hide Annie and Sophia, with the help of his other team members, at his home.  He tells no one except those directly assisting him.    This keeps them safe until after the trial when tragedy strikes again.

I liked this book.  At times I thought the book was going to loose my interest, but there was always something to keep me reading.  I recommend reading this book.

Leave me a link to your most recent book review in you comment.

Thursday, August 07, 2014

Nothing too exciting happened today.  It was pretty much a normal Thursday.  Business was good at both places, which is a PRAISE!  We are still praying for the building we would like to buy for the Castle.  We are praying the individual will reconsider our offer.

Hubby asked for skillet fried corn tonight.  Can you believe the 3 of us ate 2# of corn!!!!!! (the bag  had already been opened, so I"m estimating the 2# but that's pretty close) This stuff is really amazing!

While I was cooking the corn I worked on the dishes.  Here are before and after pictures of my counter.  (That's all of my counter too)

Today was HOT again.  No complaints from me, I like the summer weather.  Today I wore a denim skirt and my tennis shoes.  Much cooler than jeans (I don't do shorts).

Tomorrow will be Book Review Friday.

Books Books Books

I love books.  I love to read books.  Often I get reading or involved in a book and the world around me keeps going even though I'm  lost.....in a book.  I really don't like writing book reviews, but maybe I should write more of them.  You know, like we had to do back in grade school every Friday.  I will be moving over my old book reviews (from my old blog) and make an attempt to write a review for each book I read from now on.  I obviously have completed my goal for this year (6 months early) on Goodreads, but I did read several short stories that were all part of a longer story (if that makes sense) and they counted towards the goal.  SO  I really probably have about 5 or so books to go to actually meat my goal.  I planned for a bout 2 books a month, since it usually takes me about 2 weeks to read a book. Book Reviews will be my regular Friday post, starting this week.  I'd love to have you join me Friday and share a book review you have written.  Watch for the post.    I've written 2 book reviews on this blog so far.  I think I will use the other ones I've written as fillers when I don't have a book finished.  Sometimes it takes me a couple weeks or so to get a book read.  However, I will start this Friday with my review of the most recent book I've finished..

Happy Homemaker Monday ~~ 8/4/14

Good Morning!  I didn't want to get out of bed this morning.  I asked hubby if we could call in sick, but be said "No", so we got up.  LOL!  What is it about Monday mornings and wanting to be lazy?

The weather outside today:  We are supposed to get up to about 90 or so today.  Weather tweet from the NWS said we could see spotty random showers today.  The rest of the week looks about the same, with a greater chance for rain later in the week.  I did turn the AC back on last night, after having cooler temps and not needing it.

Looking outside: From where I am sitting I can't even see outside.  I left my laptop home for the boy today.  Hubby uses the POS computer most of the time now since the one he normally uses is getting slower and slower.  I am using the computer we use to run our Christmas light show.  Figured it needed used since it usually only gets used about 4 weeks out of the year.

This morning I have: I've gotten out of bed, dressed, fed the cats, and made it to the shop.  I paid a pile of bills, *sigh* and I've made a cuppa Suisse Mocha.  I don't know why I buy that stuff, it is nothing more than hot cocoa!  I do need to take a walk and pay a bill that is a few doors down, and also go buy more stamps, the post office is a block and a half away, so I will walk there also.

Thinking and pondering: building and land, make offers and how awesome I think this would be to eventually add.  Not really as a dance floor, but just something fun for the arcade.

I'm thankful for: I'm thankful that we were able to open and sell food Friday as planned.  I'm also thankful that today (Sunday) was a good day.

Breakfast this morning:  Just the cuppa suisse mocha

Looking around the house:  Need to do a few things.  The only dirty dishes in the sink are the ones we just used.  That is a good feeling.

On this week's to do list:  This week I need to buy cat litter and change boxes, Need to buy cat food.  Towels need washed and I really should put the clean clothes away so we can use the basket for dirty clothes

Currently reading:  I  finished reading  Safe by the Marshal's Side, and haven't picked a new book yet.

Watching on the Computer today/this past week:  Switched at Birth this week!  You can watch it at 7 central on ABC Family.  If you don't get ABC Family, you can watch last week's episode HERE.    This may be close to my last time watching it.....it is getting pretty stupid.    Not what I consider much of a FAMILY show anymore.  There is some pretty dumb stuff happening now.

I also watched almost all the Coal House episodes on YouTube.  I still have about 10 minutes of the last one to watch.  I need to find me some speakers to plug into this computer and I'll finish watching it.  Thank you Sandra for the recommendation.  I really enjoyed watching it.

I highly recommend AdBlock via Chrome Extension if you are going to watch online episodes.   AdBlock seems to do the trick and prevents most if not all pop-ups.  You can enable it and disable it as needed.

On the menu this past week:
Monday We grabbed some burritos from a local taco place.
Tuesday  I can't remember
Wednesday  I can't remember
Thursday  We went out for Pizza
Friday .WE WERE OPEN!!!!!!!
Saturday  .For lunch we had belly buster potatoes from a local food vendor
Sunday  Had Chinese buffet for lunch

If I have a few minutes to myself this week, I will:  Visit some of my favorite blogs again, and sneak in lots of reading minutes and hopefully some video clips on YouTube.

New recipe I tried, or want to try this week: We've been discussing a java and glazed donut shake......what do you think?  We may try it this week.....or we may not.

Favorite photo from the camera:

Our church has a free clothing exchange the first weekend of each month.  This was one of my finds this time.  I LOVE this skirt!  I actually came home with 3 plastic grocery bags full of things for me, hubby, and a couple flat sheets that looked like good curtain material.

Visiting with blog friends (blog you want to share, blog post that caught your eye):  I think I've figured out why I couldn't comment on some blogs.....it has to do with the embedded comment box on blogger.  If it's the pop-up I can comment.  SO, now that I know that......  I really like reading Jones Clips.  Gavin and Carrie are missionaries in PNG.  About a  year ago they had quints born.  I found about them from a news post, and have been following their blog every since.  They have recently gone back to PNG.

Praying for:  We are still looking into possibly getting a different building and some land next to it.
My niece
Good Business
Approval for a business load to buy the building and land

OK I'm off to pay that bill and get stamps.  I can't wait to read everyone's HHM posts this week!  Hopefully I've figured out the comment issues I've had.

Some Random Thoughts

Here it is Saturday already.  Friday was a GOOD DAY!  We got to open back up our soda shop/arcade.  Therefore I was busier, and more tired when I got home.

Sandra posted recently about Wanting to turn back time.  I Love that post!!!!!!!  I can relate very well.

I've tried several times to leave Facebook, but because it's how we reach a majority of our customer base for our businesses, it's difficult to just up and leave.  I am still an avid Twitter fan though.

I have gone AWOL from it several times and other than one page I am following (local lady and her son were severely injured in a car wreck back in April, and they update her therapy progress and the son's progress on Facebook) and the few friends I talk to, who I just can't seem to talk into moving to some other type of messaging format, and the ease of hollering for HELP when needed between the businesses, it's hard to totally leave.

Anyway Sandra mentioned how blogs used to be the "social media"  I used to LOVE reading blogs.  I started blogging way back here on blogger (back when it was blogspot, for the boys' flat traveler adventures.  That was around 2004 I think.  It was so much easier and more cost effective to blog daily and add pictures than to write everything down on paper and spend a fortune to return the visiting traveler.  From there I ventured out and created several homeschool blogs, using blogger and homeschoolblogger.  There I blogged about our school day, what we were doing, etc.  It was the thing to do.  From there I deleted all those blogs, and created my own blog here on blogger.  I moved it to my own domain, bounced around here and there between blogging formats, deleting, copying, exporting, changing blog names a few times, and even trying a personal/business blog.

The first of this year, I decided to come back to blogger and STAY PUT.  I salvaged some posts from 2013.  Recipe posts mainly, and a few book review posts (I think) from my old blog.  It's still there by the way, but many posts have been deleted or put on "draft" status instead of being published.

Why did I bounce around so much?  I think I was just trying to fit in.  I wanted to be popular and have thousands  of readers and make a lot of online friends.  For me it just didn't work out that way.  I have made a few bloging friends and those that are still around I check their blogs and try to comment.

Also at times I thought I was telling too much.  Posting too much information about family, business, work, etc.

I don't think of myself as a great blogger, and I know I'm not good with words.   I know I'll probably never be popular like some and have thousands of readers, but I do appreciate those who stop by and leave comments.  It always puts a smile on my face.

Another thing, it seems like all the blogs I tend to read or am attracted to are homemaking blogs and stay at home mom blogs  I'm far from a homemaker, and may never be a stay at home mom.  My kids are grown now, and all through their growing up both Hubby and I worked.  Half way through we started our own business and now have an additional business (no employees at either, it's just us) and we work more hours now than we did before.  Kind of by choice and kind of out of necessity just to make ends meet.

I need to find more blogs to read, that are posted to regularly, and that will encourage me.  Being self employed leaves me feeling lost and like I have no friends, because we can't go out and do things, or participate in events, etc.  Not being open = no income.  *sigh*

I'm not trying to sound whiny and complain.  I don't know how tiring being a homemaker is, and there is a good possibility you don't know how tiring being self employed is.

Some time back I decided to participate each week with a Happy Homemaker Monday post.  It irritated me because the topics, didn't really apply to me because I wasn't a homemaker.  I decided to do it anyway, and combined business and home in the post.  I think it helps give a better perspective of me, of who I am, and what I do.  Many of those posts state that you don't want to look at my house.  It's almost always messy!  Now I actually look forward to Monday and posting that post, whether I can report my house is clean or "beware don't come visiting".  LOL!

I think things are pretty boring around here.....seems like all I do is work and sleep and sneak in reading time, here and there, and try to keep clean clothes, at least in a separate basket than the dirty ones.  Every day is nearly the same.  Probably like yours!  LOL!

Enough rambling.  You're probably bored by now.  LOL!  I DID add the "reactions" to the posts, that way, if you're like me, and don't always have something to comment, at least you can "like" the post in some way. ;-)

See you on Monday for HHM!

P.S.  I wrote this at work.
